Collect your first field data
Install OrbGIS Mobile on your phone, open a survey and record answers, position and photos on site. The records are on the map before you are back in the car.
Every member of your organization can record with OrbGIS Mobile, Viewers included. Creating a survey on the phone requires the Editor role or higher. You need a survey to fill in: one built on the computer (see Create your first survey), or one you create on the phone in step 2.
Install the app and sign in
Open
mobile.orbgis.sein the phone’s browser. On an iPhone, tap Share in Safari and then Add to Home Screen; on Android, tap Install on the card at the top of the list. Open the app from the home screen and sign in with your usual OrbGIS account. If you belong to several organizations, switch under Account.Pick a survey, or create one
The Surveys tab lists your organization’s surveys, searchable, with the ones you used recently on top. A survey marked Draft can still be filled in by members. To start a new one, press +, choose Issue report, Tree inventory, Inspection, Species observation or Blank, give it a name and press Create. Add or edit questions, set the GPS accuracy limit, then press Start collecting.
Answer the questions
Choices are buttons, numbers and dates open the right keyboard, and required questions are marked. Your answers are saved on the phone as you go, so a reload or a lost connection does not lose them.
Set the position
Tap Set position. A full-screen map opens with a blue dot and an accuracy ring; the app averages several readings and shows ±N m and how many readings went into it. Tap Use my position when it has settled. Indoors or under trees the app may say the position is uncertain: wait a moment, press Use it anyway, or switch to Place on map and move the map so the cross sits on the spot. A survey can also allow Search for an address.
Take the photo
Tap Take photo and the rear camera opens, or Choose from library. The picture is downscaled and uploaded while you continue; a failed upload can be retried without losing the form.
Submit, and the next one
Press Submit. On the receipt, New response starts an empty form and New with the same answers keeps everything except position and photos, handy when you record the same kind of object many times. With no connection the app says so, keeps the answers and sends when you try again.
Check what you sent
The Mine tab lists your own records per survey, with answers, photo, position, accuracy and how the point was placed. On the computer, the survey’s Results tab and the map show the same points at once.
Every control and setting is described in OrbGIS Mobile. On the computer, the survey’s Publish sheet shows Fill in on a phone with a QR code that opens the survey directly in the app.
